How Much Should I Tip My Hairdresser?
Salon Tipping Etiquette
“How much should I tip my hairdresser?” It’s the question of the day! Is there a right amount to tip your hair stylist? These are all questions we ask ourselves, and we’re here to answer them for you. We’ve put together a short guide to help you learn how to properly tip your stylist.
The Standard Rate
If you don’t know where to start when it comes to tipping, the golden rule is 20%. While you can always tip more than 20% if you really love your haircut/color, you should always tip around 20% in order to create a good relationship with the salon and your stylist.
Things to Consider
There are some instances where you might want to pay a higher tip, including:
- If you bring your child or children with you who end up making lots of noise or disrupting the other customers.
- If you come in around the holidays, it is typical to tip a little extra as a holiday bonus.
- Last minute appointments should typically involve a higher-than-usual tip because the salon went out of its way to fit you in their schedule.
- Tip the assistant who blow-dried or shampooed your hair. You could give them around $5 for these services.
When You Have a Coupon
Everyone likes using a coupon! Although, it’s important to know that if you’re using a coupon or if you have a Groupon deal, it’s still best to tip 20% of the true cost of the service. If you are not sure of the true total, ask someone for assistance.
Do You Need to Tip the Owner of the Salon?
Yes! If the salon owner worked on your hair the entire time, it’s best to tip him or her 20% or more. It’s also best to tip the owner if he or she helped your hair stylist with your new do!
